Leo Reports Two of Three Baby Cardinals Hatched

I wanted to show my Mom the nest. When I got there, I said, "Oh, my God! They hatched!" Minna came to look, too. She said that they were really cute. Mom came. At first she couldn't see them, but I moved. And then she saw them. She said, "Oh, Ya! They hatched. " --Leo as told to JB

When this picture was taken, one baby was curled up at the bottom of the nest. The remaining egg had not yet hatched.

Cardinals in residence

The cardinals have built a nest and laid three eggs in it right outside the kitchen window in the tree by the garden hose faucet. Everybody please be quiet in this area and don't bump the tree.

Squirrel who thinks he's a dog

the other morning while i was meditating i heard this weird scraping sound like someone was rubbing 2 rocks together. i tried to ignore it, but after a while my curiosity got the better of me. i walked over to the window and looked around.

then i spotted this big fat squirrel up in the tree, right where our clothes line is tied in. he was up there with a big ass bone that he must have stolen from ella. it was like as thick around as he was. don't know how that fool got up the tree with that bone, but he was up there scraping his teeth on it. then he spotted me, dropped the bone and ran. the bone fell out of the tree and bounced half way across the lawn to land about 10 feet from my window.

he paused on the ground looking at me, and then looking at the bone -- back and forth -- back and forth -- trying to decide whether to take it back. finally he ran away. freaky squirrel.

Ducks often gather here, sometimes as many as a hundred, when other shallower ponds around the Cape are completely frozen over.

Development Threatens Wilderness!

Beavers have built dams on the far side of Potato Pit, next to the road with the black pipe and in a small motion on the other side of that road from Potato Pit.

found whitus tightus!

today while walking near the stone barn i came upon the rare whitus tightus fungus. as with the one that babette and losel found earlier, this one was partially decayed, or perhaps badly damaged in an overwhelming wedgie. let's hope not the latter. this one may be old and unsightly, but i believe it is still edible. pictures included below:
